BaggårdTeatret: Literally ”The Backyard Theatre”, our name has connotations of tenement building courtyards, slums, or rickety sheds and garages.

BaggårdTeatret conceives and presents contemporary works for the stage drawing on stories from our own little world, but aimed at the world in general. Our motto is BE MOVED. We want to move our audiences while making sure our productions have the potential to transform contemporary society.

BaggårdTeatret has been going for more than half a century and its tours have taken in Denmark and many other corners of the globe.

BaggårdTeatret

In 2007 BaggårdTeatret was officially adopted as the Municipality of Svendborg’s local theatre with regional status: this means that in addition to our own productions we work with other theatre companies and groups in the area, covering the performing arts in general. We also run the municipality school theatre scheme which brings forty per cent of Svendborg’s school children to performances every year, and we collaborate with a whole range of other local partners.

BaggårdTeatret has a dedicated audience to whom we also present the best guest productions; as well as shows perhaps more suitable for grown-ups these include special productions aimed at younger audiences. Our theatre and its management enjoy an idyllic location known as “The Rat Trap”, a one-hundred-and-thirty-year-old summer theatre out in the woods.

BaggårdTeatret is supported by the Municipality of Svendborg, the National Council for the Arts, and various private trusts and foundations.

Artistic Director Jakob Bjerregaard Engmann
